SUSTAINABILITY EFFORTS

The Tournament of Roses cares deeply for the environment and follows recommended conservation practices for water usage, utilities, office procedures and grounds maintenance.

WATER CONSERVATION

The Tournament of Roses cares deeply for the environment and follows recommended conservation practices for water usage, utilities, office procedures and grounds maintenance.

The Pasadena Department of Water & Power sets the suggested water conservation levels for local businesses and residents. The Tournament of Roses consistently meets these recommendations and has put into place additional conservation practices such as restricting watering to twice per week, adding mulch to planters and gardens, adjusting the watering schedule to the current weather conditions and eliminating the annual scalping and seeding of the lawn.

In addition, the Tournament of Roses uses a variety of water efficient products.

The Tournament of Roses continuously evaluates water consumption and options for conservation.

OFFICE AND GROUNDS PRACTICES

The Tournament of Roses offices employ the following strategies to save energy and materials:

WHITE ROOF: Energy-efficient white roofs have been installed on the office area of Tournament House as well as two Tournament-owned float-building facilities. As new roofs are required for other buildings, this roofing type will be considered.

ENERGY-SAVING LIGHTING: Compact fluorescent light bulbs are installed throughout office spaces. Skylights also help reduce the amount of electricity required for lighting.

RECYCLING BINS: Recycling bins are located throughout the offices. Educational signage about recycling is posted and staff members receive training through workshops.

E-WASTE: Computers, phones, other electronic devices, and batteries are disposed of at approved e-waste sites.

REUSABLE DISH WARE: A purified water system is in place to diminish the use of disposable water bottles. For dinners of fewer than 100 people, china is used in an effort to reduce waste. When reusable glassware is not an option, the Tournament of Roses provides compostable items, recyclable items or items made from recycled products. The Tournament of Roses also works with caterers to recycle at all events at Tournament House and provides educational signage for consumers as appropriate.

WASTE DIVERSION

Waste is diverted from landfills through the following programs:

STADIUM RECYCLING: More than 100 recycling volunteers and 500 dedicated receptacles for bottles, cans, and glass are stationed inside the Rose Bowl Stadium as part of the comprehensive waste diversion program.

CARDBOARD COLLECTION: Dedicated bins for cardboard collection are set up near the stadium.

ROSE PARADE RECYCLING: Recyclable bins are set up under Tournament grandstands at the Rose Parade. Last year, a total of 4,964 beverage containers were collected at the park and the parade viewing area.

RECYCLABLE BOTTLES: At the end of the parade, all marching band members receive Dasani Water PlantBottles®, made from up to 30% plant-based material. The bottles are 100% recyclable.

POST-EVENT DONATION: Floral arrangements and nonperishable foods are donated to local senior citizen centers and homeless shelters following the Rose Bowl Game.

GRANDSTANDS: The metal scaffolding and wood materials used to construct the Rose Parade grandstands are reused following deconstruction.

UTILITIES

The Tournament of Roses employs the following strategies to save energy:

ELECTRICAL GRID: The majority of energy used to power the Rose Parade comes from the electrical grid, minimizing the use of diesel generators.

FLOAT BARN LIGHTING: Energy-efficient lighting is installed in two of the four buildings where floats are built.

NATURAL LIGHT: The Rose Parade makes use of natural light and permanent lighting structures that minimize the need to bring in additional temporary event lights.

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

The Tournament of Roses encourages the use of public transportation through the following means:

PUBLISHED OPTIONS: A full listing of public transportation options for the Rose Bowl Game and the Rose Parade is available on the Tournament of Roses website. Printed game tickets and event brochures also highlight public transportation options and encourage carpooling.

METRO GOLD LINE: The Gold Line actively promotes public transportation access to the Rose Parade and Rose Bowl Game.

SHUTTLE PROGRAMS: Natural gas buses and shuttles transport an average of 15,000 attendees from the Parsons Building parking structure and Old Pasadena to the game.

PRINTING

The Tournament of Roses employs the following strategies to minimize waste and maximize the use of environmentally friendly materials:

PARADE PROGRAM: Parade programs are printed on FSC-certified paper.

INTERNAL NOTIFICATIONS: Weekly-updated calendars, meeting notifications, and most event invitations are sent electronically to Tournament of Roses members and staff, cutting down on paper usage.

SIGNAGE: Banners are used for a minimum of four years; removable sponsor adhesives facilitate reuse. Disposable cardboard and paper signage materials are avoided.
